Doghouse Dormer Kit
Adding a doghouse dormer or two to your Vermont Cabin pre-cut kit is a great way to bring in extra light since each one includes a window. This option also provides an additional 6-feet of headspace in the loft. Perfect for adding a reading nook or desk to your space.
This sturdy Doghouse Dormer kit includes everything you need to add a 6-foot wide gabled dormer to your Vermont Cabin Kit. Hemlock wall and roof framing, shiplap pine siding, a 2x3 double-pane, double-hung insulated window, corrugated metal roof, and aluminum flashing are included. Assembly instructions and fastening hardware will be shipped with the prefab dormer kit.
Doghouse Dormers create an interesting architectural detail from the exterior and extra vertical space inside. Lofts can be dark with low ceilings. Adding a doghouse dormer can dramatically change the atmosphere of your lofted space. The 2-foot by 3-foot double-hung window is insulated with energy-efficient double-pane glass which provides a natural light source. Many clients enjoy adding two or more doghouse dormers to each bearing wall or combine with a shed roof dormer for maximum room to stretch.
The space beneath a dormer could be used in a variety of ways. Add a bench, comfy chair, or floor pillow and a lamp to create a reading nook. A desk placed underneath the window can turn your dormer into a micro office, study space, or vanity. The natural light coming in from the window could enhance this space for writing, reading, making art, or putting on your makeup. If gazing at the planets and stars is something that interests you the window provides the perfect outlook for your telescope. Placing one of our 2x3 pellet boxes underneath the window could be a great way to create an out-of-the-way storage space while also being used as a bench. If you will be using the loft as a bedroom for your children you could place a twin bed under each dormer. Let each child decorate their dormered sleeping space with string lights, curtains or drapes, plants, flowers, artwork, shelving, peg racks or hooks, and other decorations to personalize their area.
